Basskadetz Interview By Tariq Ziyad

Interview by Tariq Ziyad

Tell us a bit about yourself

Ben : Hi, my name is Ben Ford, one half of Basskadetz from Northampton. I've been Dj’ing for 4/5 years.

Fred : I'm Fred Welsh, one half of Basskadetz, a 26 year old DJ/producer from Coventry.

How did you get involved in Sliced Note Recordings for their 17th release?

Ben: Well, l being a Fan of Missrepresent’s through my years as a raver, I sent Aliina some of our unreleased material, who liked what we provided whilst also giving us advice and support, it was a no brainer to work with Sliced Note Recordings

For those who don’t know, tell us a bit about Basskadetz and how it began. How did you get into music production? What were the initial steps?

Fred : Ben and I met at college when I was 17. We spent a lot of our free time together and with our friends ben slowly introduced me to DnB with guys like Shy FX, Pendulum, TC, Andy C and DJ Hype. As we got older we started going to raves, most notably Random Concept. I began learning to DJ and a few years later I said to Ben “mate you need to get on mixing, your a quality drummer, this should be easy for you to pick up” and the rest, as they say, is history. On the producing side of it. If your a DJ and you want to constantly learn then producing is natural progression from DJ’ing in my opinion.
Ben: We started about 3 years ago, Fred has always impressed me with his skills on the decks and had always been interested in learning, I’ve a had a passion for DnB since my teens when I introduced Fred to the music. Watching him mix how he did, he said i needed to get on it, I went to Fred’s one night and asked if he minded if I had a go, he was shocked by what I could do (as he had no idea I had been practising) and we decided to become a duo, 2 best friends performing in a scene of music we love has turned out to be a big success and we haven’t looked back

How would you describe your production style?

Fred : Naughty………. Haha!!!!
I think it’s a mix of jump up and Neuro/Tech, I think I’ll call it tump chup
Which events from over the years in your career really stick in your mind and why?

Ben and Fred :The 2 big events that stick out are Random Concept Summer Gathering and City Flow Belgium

Random Concept events have always been my favourite, being a Northampton/Coventry Lad I have attended most of their events, so to be picked to perform at their festival was very surreal and I will never forget it

City Flow Belgium was something I had never experienced, and we were not expecting an International Booking so early on in our music career, the ravers in Belgium know how to party! And it was amazing to represent CRE8DNB on their stage and be part of it

What your first experience of DnB and how did you get into the sound?

Ben:The first DnB tune I ever heard was Adam F ‘Circles’, I loved it from the minute it dropped so I decided to delve more into the genre and discovered this was my music of choice

Who were your major influences in terms of music production?

Fred: Maztek is a big influence for me absolutely love his style. But it’s hard just to single one out so…………….. Annix, Calyx & Teebee, Jaydan, DJ Hazard & Majistrate.
When would you say was your breakout moment when heads turned to your music?

Ben: I think since becoming a CRE8DNB artist its given us more exposure and a bigger audience, and production wise since we have had releases, comments made by the likes of Nicky Blackmarket, DJ Phantasy, Kenny Ken, Missrepresent, Bass Brothers, Radio 1’s B Traits and so on, the positive promo we have had from these calibre of artists has helped us considerably, so thank you to everyone taking time to check us out.

Fred : This release for sure

What is it about the current wave of DnB music that appeals to you?

Ben: I love the fact there’s such a huge spectrum of DnB, there s a different type of DnB for what ever mood your in!

What made you choose DnB as a genre?

Ben: The music gave me an adrenaline rush the first time I heard DnB, I’ve never been away from it since!

Fred: The DnB family scene, has the best vibes!

If you could work on a track with anyone from now or way back when, who would it be?

Fred : Noisia. Best DnB producers hands down.
And if you could remix any tune of your choice, which one would you choose and why?

Fred : DJ Hype ‘Rinse Out’ Because it is an absolute banger of a tune! One of the major classics

Ben: I’ll second that, DJ Hype ‘Rinse Out’ , Such a massive tune

Tell us a few of your all time and current favourite producers?

Ben: Original Sin, DJ Hazard, Annix, Aphrodite, Benny Page, Dimension & AMC, there’s plenty more though, there’s so many good producers out there

Are there any unfulfilled goals or aspirations of yours musically?

Fred : I would like to broaden my skill set in music with learning to play more instruments. I’m already an accomplished guitarist and I can also play the violin, cello and the keyboard/piano. The main one I want to learn is the saxophone I think it is an amazing instrument.

Where have you DJ’ed?

Ben and Fred : We Have DJ’ed at Summer Gathering festival which as we stated earlier was a massive personal achievement, City Flow Festival In Belgium like wise, also we have performed at Eksman’s Next Hype a couple of times, Strictly Jump Up In Bristol, We Call It DnB, and loads more to name, a couple of debuts for certain events are also happening later on in the year

Who is supporting your music right now?

Fred and Ben: A big shout out goes to Misrepresent and Lady D Zire here, their support has been amazing. Also our recent release Cerberus on Sliced Note Recordings has had huge support from names such as Kenny Ken, Roni Size, Bass Brothers and B Traits just to name a few.
Describe to us your approach to a DJ set, do you like to gently warm up the crowd or go for the bangers or more of a journey approach?

Fred-I like to play energetic Bangers that take you on a journey

Ben- Really can depend on the event we are playing, I like to play to the crowd and that they are enjoying the music, as I enjoy the whole spectrum myself. Though I do like to throw in the jump up to get it naughty haha!

Of all the tunes you’ve made, which is your favourite?

Fred: Cerberus for me. But there’s a couple I’m sitting on at the minute that may take that spot.

How did you link up with Missrepresent, the founder of the label?

Ben- Missrepresent liked a tune we sent across for her opinion, which was our first release on Sliced Note Recordings called ‘Tempting’, we did not expect her to say she wanted to release it on her label, that was a big moment for us

And who would you like to work with?

Ben : Original Sin, if I had to pick one he would probably be my favourite artist, his tunes are unreal and have mental energy

Which tunes are essentials in your DJ sets right now?

Ben: There’s a few I play very regularly in my sets at moment some of them are Filthy Habits ‘Nah Talk’, Shoot Dem Decimal Bass Remix, Dimension Whip Slap, Taxman ‘Creepshow’, Kyrist ‘Divergence VIP’, Ed Rush ‘Scarabs’ & AMC ‘Thor’

Can we have your top 5 tracks?

Fred :This is so tough!
5. Dead limit
3.Valley Of The Shadows
1.Rinse Out

Ben: In no order:
Original Sin – Pimp Don’t Limp
Konichi – Field Of Vibrations
Aphrodite – Ganja Man
Taxman – Creepshow
Friction & K-Tee Remix – Back To Your Roots

Who have you enjoyed making music with the most and who would you still like to colab with?

Fred :Projekt is the one I most enjoy working with
And if you could remix any tune of your choice, what would it be?

Ben: Personal choice of mine would be Ceph-’19 Seconds’, it goes off every time I’ve heard it played out, also gets regularly used haha!

So before we hit play on Cerberus, can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind it?

Ben : As we like the high energy in new dancefloor tunes, and the filthiness of jump up, seemed suitable to create a tune that fits in between the sub genres. Cerberus is based on a mythological creature that represents what this tune is about, shows the dark side and also high tempo
Any final words and shout outs?
Fred :Big shouts to Misrepresent, DJ Blackley, the CRE8DNB crew and the Twisted Soundz Crew. As artists we really wouldn’t be where we are now without the support of these guys. Also shouts to Projekt, AON, Toddlah and Garry K and Presha for the support and opportunities over the last year or so. And shouts out to my family especially my mum and step dad, my partner Gemma and my close friend Sam Harper for all the motivation and support. Salute to you all.

Ben: Like Fred, Massive shouts to Misrepresent, DJ Blackley, the CRE8DNB crew and the Twisted Soundz Crew we really wouldn’t be where we are now without their support, they took chances on us when we sent mixes and productions, and are still very supportive to this day. Also shouts to Projekt, AON, Toddlah and Garry K and Presha for the support and opportunities over the last year again and shout outs to my Mum, Dad and brother Sam, to my extremely supportive partner Danielle, who puts up with it all haha! My 1 year old son who gets in to rave mode when i turn the decks on at home (Basskadet in the making) Our best Friend Sam Harper who has always pushed us to do what we do and shout out to Cory Jones who is always wanting new mixes! And a shout out to each and everyone who has supported us in anyway, it doesn’t go unnoticed :)
